Objective

The objectives of this assignment are to recommend enhancements to conventional electrical power generation systems, research on current renewable energy sources which can then be incorporated into a simulated model of a simplified Smart Grid, while demonstrating power factor correction.

Problem statement

Today, as far as energy sources are concerned, there is an urgent rush towards meeting the ever increasing energy demands via available resources, novel resources and by reducing wastages. Due to this, there has been a significant focus on exploring means of maximising the efficiencies of existing power plants, exploiting renewable energy sources and improving transmission efficiencies. Smart grids have contributed greatly towards meeting these ends.

In this assignment, you are to model a simplified Smart Grid system which should include the following components:-
- Two (2) generating resources; i.e.a conventional source, and a renewable source.
- Load in the domestic, low voltage commercial and low voltage industrial sectors.
- Power factorcorrection using capacitor banks.
- Battery bank to store the excess power generated (if any).

In the execution of this exercise, the following should be demonstrated:-

- Evaluation of two (2) new technologies used in conventional electrical power generating plants, leading up to the justification of your recommendations for implementing them to improve the plant efficiencies.

- An in-depth review of literature of the contemporary work carried out within the scope of two (2) renewable generating sources, leading up to the justification of your selection of the renewable source.

- Mathematical formulation of the modelling and simulation of the modelling.
