YouTube Video: Understanding Social Science Research: Research Methods
1) Choose a sociological research topic that interests you and then decide what you would like to research about it. For example: I am interested in health care access and I would like to understand how household income impacts who does and does not have access to health care.
2) Choose a research method that would help you to understand your topic. For example, I would use "existing sources" such as Census data because it contains both household income and health care access status. It is okay to take a guess here--your response doesn't need to be perfect.
Make sure that you are incorporating sociology into your research idea. Sociology studies just about every aspect of the social world that you can think of including religion, health, politics, sports, media, technology and science, race and ethnicity, education, social inequality, and social class.
