• Introduction to the Port of Hueneme (shanshan)
The Port of Hueneme is a vital international niche market port on the west coast for autos, fresh produce{bananas mostly, but also tropical high value fruits, like avocado (they can't supply the market with enough avocados that they will buy them from you if you own a tree!) and pineapple}, special cargo (like oil rig maintenance and repair), oversized cargo (huge objects, or anything that rolls, think cars, farm equipment), bulk liquids (liquid fertilizer) and fish. The port of Hueneme is the West Coast leader for banana imports with over 600000 tons on over 156 vessels annually.
The only deep water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the port of Hueneme is an important place for international trade in California, and the port of Hueneme is ranked 28 of 270 ports in the United States. The port owns and manages(but it is independently operated, I think) the Ventura County Railway, a 12- mile loop of track operated by Genesee and Wyoming. Freight transferred from the port connects to Union Pacific Railroad, providing an important intermodal link to North America.
The port is a vital economic engine for California and Ventura County, with $9 billion in goods movement, $1.5 billion economic activity, and 13,633 trade-related jobs, 2,524 direct port industry longshore workers, terminal operators and warehouse workers. These are jobs that can earn six-figures, which comparatively is significantly higher than the county average for the skill level of this type of work. The port supports the community through its presence at local events and advocacy of local and institutional programs. Last the port is committed to protecting the environment and supporting a healthy quality of life for the entire community.

One of the bottlenecks Port Hueneme is faced with is the lack of land needed for expansion because the Port is surrounded by cities and communities. As business booms, the port is unable to properly store products in a single space. The port is forced to employ containers for shipping so as to avoid taking on more costs. The restricted amount of space for expansion causes another problem, restricted storage space. (Abier)
In today's business environment, one of the most important concerns of inventory managers is the determination of optimal policies regarding inventory and production systems while under the restrictions of a budget and storage space. Therefore, restricted storage space can add/create a continuous cycle of disorganization and backorders. (Abier)

Channels are not deep enough for a fully load ship. The port is 35 feet deep, hence ships must decrease their load in order to safely use the port. Right now, the port has around 15 customers that are short loading their ships and these restrictions have become a major burden. (Silvia) problem.
• What is the solution or recommendations for the Port of Hueneme?
1. We recommend building an elevated parking under the ground for more parking in less space. Automated parking systems provide 2 or more times the number of available parking spaces than conventional parking of the same volume, providing a faster return on investment and greater revenues. (Abdulmuhsen) Creating an Eco-Park. This idea was developed by a Japanese company, Giken Engineering Group. The company deals with tricky construction problems such as: Building a highway on the side of a mountain, reducing railway renovation accidents, parking/storing cars or bicycle in crowded cities. The company's five construction principles center on the protection of the environment, the safety of stakeholders, the speed of project completion, the economical aspect of the project, and the aesthetics of the project. Giken structure fits fifty cars and is earthquake-resistant and take only 100 days to install. Individual usage, to park and retrieve a car, takes approximately 24 seconds. The Eco-Park requires a diameter of just 20 meters and leaves behind an aboveground presence of just one car-sized hut. (Abier)

2. Deepen the port from 35 to 40 feet would allow the harbor to accommodate larger and more efficient ships to call on the port. And this could bring more than 200,000 tons a year in additional cargo. Moreover, it will create jobs, and business and tax revenue. (Silvia) #5 solution
