Response to the crisis of shootings in schools, lawmakers

Assignment task:

In response to the crisis of shootings in schools, lawmakers in a number of states have forsaken proven interventions that solve the problem. Instead, they suggest arming teachers as a solution to the guns issue, which is risky and untrue. Actually, a teacher who is armed cannot, in a situation of severe duress and anxiety, change into a law enforcement individual (Lott, 2018). A teacher who is armed is most likely to fire towards a student standing by or get shot by law enforcing officers responding to a shooting situation instead of being an effective intervention to a shooter in a learning institution. Therefore, other evidence-based interventions could be useful in stopping/reducing gun shootings in schools. In response to Parkland shooting, President Trump, in his reaction, showed acceptance of the idea of continued gun violence cycle (Lott, 2018). His proposal to introduce guns among teachers in order to deal with gun violence caused by students is an intervention that cannot work. Teachers should not be armed for several reasons. These include access to educators' guns by students, increased risk of shooting, and liability risks. Current research suggests that children can access guns when they are present. One of the studies conducted shows that most children know where their parents keep their guns. Actually, more than 75% of children who handle guns do so without their parents knowing. From the same study, approximately 25% of the parents studied were not aware that their kids had, in fact, handled their guns (Lott, 2018)
