I believe the quote, "If anything, gender conflicts are even more acute when dealing not with symbols, but with the realities of authority, of office and power" refers to the pattern of a male dominated church, dating centuries back. The book refers to the Bible, and the language that is used in scripture as well as in hymns that point to the presence of male dominance. One could argue that hymns such as, "Rise Up, O Men of God," or Good Christian Men Rejoice" show a lack of inclusiveness when it relates to gender. I wonder how much of this is literal in terms of man vs women or if it was more of a generalization. I never gave much thought to this topic, however, reading about it allowed me to think back to when I attended church as a child. I grew up in, New York in a very conservative Catholic church. As I was reading I was reflecting on my experience and what role women played in the church, if any. With that, I drew the conclusion that I have no recollection of women playing an important role within the church service. This separation must have started at a young age because there were no young girls involved in church services, but they had young men serving as altar boys. This separation can be seen in the highest of positions within the Catholic, due to prominent positions being held by males. I have not been to the Catholic church in many years so I cannot speak to the progression or lack there of.
