Response nurse when first-time mother expresses hesitancy

Problem: What is the most suitable response for the nurse when a first-time mother expresses hesitancy about having her baby undergo the PKU newborn screening To explain that all babies are required by state/federal law to be tested at least twice, once immediately after delivery and once at the 2-month of age if the infant is displaying any signs or symptoms. The test is important so referrals can be made if needed This is to test the newborn's jaundice level at 24 hours of life so we can prevent hyperbilirubinemia. The PKU screening is primarily for research purposes and not essential. The PKU is screening tool that is required by state law to identify metabolic disorders early, allowing for timely intervention if needed.
