This author would like to thank Mr. David Coursey for recording an informative video about data breaches for this author's classmates. In the video, he discusses how he could walk into facilities and commodore valuable information. While he is one of the good guys hired to improve security defenses, many with the same knowledge and skillset have ill intent.
Researching The Department of Health and Human Services websites' Office of Civil Records newsroom allowed this reader to examine the various data breaches impacting the healthcare industry. A February 2, 2023, press release by the Office for Civil Rights follows the 2016 hacking incident involving 2.81 consumers. The threat actor " gained unauthorized access to electronic protected health information, potentially affecting millions. The hacker accessed protected health information that included patient names, physician names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, clinical details, dates of service, claims information, lab results, medications, diagnoses and conditions, and health insurance information" (HHS.gov, 2023). Following the breach and the investigation by OCR, Banner Health has since agreed to conduct a thorough analysis to determine what measures they should take to develop and implement processes to safeguard their patients' information.
Every entity that maintains personal information should develop processes that safeguard its consumers. Having emotional health or identifying information stolen or available for hackers to access is a violation of HIPPA. This author has experienced having a debit card compromised. That was the worst experience in the world.
