Assignment task 1: Research the following example of environmental racism:
- Downriver Detroit (review Toxic Town: Michigan's Most Polluted Zip Code [Time 11:00; closed captions available from Amara])
- Research and locate additional data. Be sure to use reliable sources for your data. That means no blogs, no Wikipedia, no Facebook posts, etc. Stick to reputable news sources (Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, or peer reviewed journal articles.)
- Once all of your data and information is collected, you will discuss in detail your data findings.
- Also include any specifics you were able to uncover regarding your selected topic.
- Which groups in society were most affected by environmental racism?
- Where any major corporations involved?
- Has any legal action been initiated by either the community, the local authorities, the state or federal government?
- Apply one of the three (3) core sociological theories to analyze and explain this occurrence of environmental racism (Functionalism, Conflict theory or Symbolic Interaction)
Assignment task 2: Research The Womens Suffrage Movement
Discuss the following on The Women's Suffrage Movement
- When did this social movement occur?
- Who were the leaders? What type of social movement was it?
- Can you identify a precipitating event that sparked the movement?
- Was the movement successful? Did it result in identifiable social change? Look for legislation or public policy initiatives related to the goals of the movement.
- Review the theories presented in Module 5.2, chapter 21, section 21.2. Which of these theories do you think is most useful in analyzing the success or failure of the movement?
