Relationship-oriented leaders establish mutual trust, respect, and listen to employee needs. The relationship between leaders and followers is very important. Task-oriented leaders are motivated by task accomplishment. They provide clear directions and set performance standards. Task-oriented leaders tend to do better in very easy or very difficult situations whereas relationship-oriented leaders do best in situation of intermediate favorability (Daft, 2005).
