Problem:
The relationship between the mind and the brain has been debated for centuries. The brain gives physical form to the mind, and the mind is responsible for our actions. Two perspectives on this relationship are functionalism and epiphenomenalism. Functionalism says that mental states are defined by their purpose, not their physical makeup, and the brain works to produce these functions. Epiphenomenalism says that mental states happen as a result of brain activity and don't influence behavior. Both ideas show how complex the relationship between the mind and brain is.
