Assignment
1) Both the television and radio industries developed as they did because of a combination of political, cultural, and industrial events and decisions. For this question, please do the following:
1. Choose a onespecific decade in either the television industry or the radio industry
2. explain how something occurring within that industry impacted how the industry developed (e.g. what it looked like, how it functioned, or who it represented).
3. explain how something in the culture at large (e.g. world events, events at home, social norms, etc.) impacted how that industry developed (e.g. what it looked like, how it functioned, who it represented).
4. explain how something in politics and/or regulation impacted how that industry developed (e.g. what it looked like, how it functioned, who it represented).
2) Using wichever medium you chose for question #1, explain the concept of the "network" system in the following ways:
1. an example of a network and an individual related to that network.
2. briefly, how a network distributed material
3. briefly, the relationship between "networks" and "affiliates" and "O&Os"
4. briefly, how it worked economically (both who got paid by whom for what, how did it make money).
3) explain how your answer to questions #1 and 2 relates to the concept of generative mechanisms. In this, you must
1. define generative mechanisms in a way other than repeating the words I used in class.
2. Show that you understand the concept by linking it back to your answer. You can expand upon your answer as well.
4) Using the medium you chose for question 1 & 2, explain how its norms, regulations, industrial norms and/or content reflected a specific ideology or reflected dominant norms.
