Porter, Rosalie P. Forked Tongue: The Politics of Bilingual Education. New York: Basic Books, Inc., 1990. Print. In an excerpt from her book, Forked Tongue: The Politics of Bilingual Education, Rosalie Porter related how attending school and learning English allowed her to see beyond the confines of her Italian-American community. Written from the heart by someone who experienced firsthand the trials and rewards of adopting a new language in a new land, Porter provides an insider's perspective on bilingual education. Porter, who struggled to learn English while raised in an Italian home, dedicated an exhaustive study and analysis of language learning for the future quality of education. In the book she also cites Richard Rodriguez, another prolific author who writes about bilingual education. Mandatory schooling moved Porter to succeed, both intellectually and materially. She states, "I began to want to learn, with a desire for a range of experiences, and yes, a desire for material things and an interesting job" (183). Her transition to American culture had its difficulties; Porter and women like her were expected to marry young, within the ethnic group, and remain close to home. Consequently, she was often involved in a clash of cultures. Porter writes about what is really happening in bilingual education with an urgent call for reform. Her stance regarding bilingual education becomes political at several points in the book. She believes that prolonging learning of the English language could pose barriers to students who are assimilating into the education system. She strives to create public awareness that will make a difference, but suggests that opposition may increase further as the issue attains greater national visibility. Finally, Porter asserts that children have the right and opportunities for self-fulfillment and thus can open doors to education and career advancement while maintaining the importance of their cultural heritage
