Reflect upon Le Ly Hayslip's story as well as the general plight of the Vietnamese people during the US-Vietnam War ;
Over the course of the term, you will read two books for formal review. The books, Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and Le Ly Hayslip's When Heaven and Earth Changed Places, are widely considered very useful in understanding the Vietnam era from perspectives outside of the conventional geopolitical and military treatments. After reading each book, you will complete a brief reflective essay.
In a minimum of 750 words (approximately 3 pages), you will write a reflective essay on Le Ly Hayslip's When Heaven and Earth Changed Places (chapters 1-9 were required reading, so your review may be limited to these chapters). While you have a great deal of latitude with regard to write about in the essay, do be sure to organize your essay in the following manner:
A concise introduction/synopsis of the book;
Personal reflection on the book, including any specific aspects you think to be especially pertinent;
Citations in proper APA
Whether or not you would recommend this book to someone else and explain;
