Respond to this. We are seeing a widespread reevaluation of the role of law enforcement in our society. There are obviously different and at times conflicting views regarding the actions and expectations of these organizations. However, given the widespread outcry from so many communities it has been made very clear that changes are necessary. In order to institute reasonable and workable changes there needs to be a considerable amount of thought into what exactly we expect. Emotionally driven change can have detrimental societal impacts with long term implications. What I find interesting is that when we start considering the role of law enforcement, we need to start with the overarching intent of maintaining a civilized society. Our current system of law enforcement is designed around the concept of rule of the community by the community itself. This is why there is such a fragmented law enforcement structure throughout the nation. Ultimately law enforcement is held accountable by the communities they serve and not by a state or national body with distant or disconnected ideals.
