Discussion Assignment - International Law
1. Read the questions below. Then find the information requested about the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ.) This is not a big research job. You may want to search differences between the ICC and ICJ. Some links are provided below, but they may actually require more research than what is required.
A.Explain some of the differences between the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, including the type of cases that are heard in each, the parties that can come before each of the courts, and whether the United States is a member of each court.
B.In your educated opinion, what aspects of sovereignty must a nation-state be willing to give up to be a member of the ICC? The ICJ? (There isn't a specific name. What power, or independence, must a nation-state give up for itself, or on behalf of its citizens, if it is a member of either court?)
C.In your educated opinion, why is the United States a member of one court and not the other?
