Algeria Case Study: Counterinsurgency and Human Rights
Using key terms and concepts from the reading, answer the following questions in a balanced way.
1. FLN used Muslim women to carry bombs into French cafes and targeted locations with large numbers of French youth. Did you find the fact that women were used in terrorism attacks during this time period surprising? Why or why not?
2. The FLN was decimated; the French won the battle but lost the war. International support to include that of the US brought Algeria independence in 1962. Why do you think there was international support for Algerian independence even though the FLN utilized terrorism to draw attention to their demands? Explain.
