1) Read: Lee, Everett S. 1966. "A Theory of Migration." Demography 3(1): 47-57. Give an example of a push factor and an example of a pull factor. What other factors affect decisions to migrate?
2) Read: Massey, Douglas S. 1990. "The Social and Economic Origins of Immigration." Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science 510: 60-72. In this article, Massey calls our attention to factors that often affect migration decision and would be missed with too narrow a focus on economic costs and benefits. Give a few examples of such factors. Could your examples be integrated in Lee's framework or do they suggest this framework is somewhat outdated?
3) Derks, Annuska. 2006. "Khmer Women and Global Factories," pp.193-204 in Leakthina Chau-Pech Ollier and Tim Winter (Eds.) Expressions of Cambodia: The Politics of Tradition, Identity, and Change.
