RADIOISOTOPE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:
Radioisotope diagnostic procedures include perfusion, ventilation and gallium scan.
Perfusion Lung Scan
Following injection of a radioactive isotope, scans are made with a scintillation
camera.
1) Measures blood perfusion through the lungs; evaluates lung function on a regional basis.
2) Useful in perfhion (vascular) abnormalities-pulmonary embolism.
Ventilation Scan
1) Inhalation of radioactive gas (xenon, krypton), which diffuses throughout the lungs.
2) Useful in detecting ventilation abnormalities (emphysema).
Gallium Scan
Radioisotope lung scan used to detect inflammatory conditions of the lungs.
