Radar Systems

• Radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging. 
• A radar uses an antenna to transmit a series of electromagnetic waves or pulses, and an antenna (usually the same one) to detect electromagnetic signals that have been reflected off objects of interest.

• The time delay between transmission and receiving the reflected signal gives information about the range of the reflector, and the 
• frequencies and polarisations present in the received signal gives more information about the position and the structure of the reflector. 
• Radar system operate in a wide variety of wavebands from wavelengths of 10s of metres to wavelengths of the order of 1 mm.
• The details of radar operation are not importan for this course, but some appreciation of radar accuracies and their limitations is useful.
