A small Canadian law firm specializing in immigration law has what it considers a successful website. One of the most popular features of the website is its newsletter which offers interpretation of current immigration laws in layman's terms as well as related immigration information. The company is considering making some changes to the website that might make it even more successful. They are as follows:
- Adding a program that will do a free online visa eligibility assessment. If the potential client's assessment shows that they are eligible for a visa, the program will redirect them to a registration page where the user will be asked to provide contact information so that the law firm can contact them. The user can of course decline to fill out the form by exiting the web page.
- Adding a users' forum to the website so that users can discuss pertinent immigration issues.
- Adding a helpful links page that will include hyperlinks to websites that might be of interest to potential immigrants.
Tasks
a. Evaluate each proposed change separately and state whether you would recommend the change. Explain your decision.
b. What type of website programming do you recommend for the visa eligibility application? Client-side, Server-side, or remote scripting? Explain your answer.
c. What should the law firm take into consideration before adding a helpful links page to their site?
d. What should the law firm take into consideration before adding a user forum to their website?
Question 2
A close friend plans to create website for his new business. He heard that the Canadian government has published some standard guidelines for websites. He asked that you answer the following questions for him before he proceeds with his new website:
a. List and briefly describe the Canadian standards and guidelines for websites.
b. Does every Canadian website have to comply with these guidelines? Explain.
c. He heard that W3C also has website standards and he is wondering if they are the same. Compare the two and provide your friend a brief summary on your findings.
d. Your friend was told by a colleague that, for a private company, it isn't worth the time, effort, and expense to comply with web standards. Explain your position on the matter.
Question 3
Go online and research the advantages and disadvantages of legacy code. (You may also use the links from Topic 5 on the subject).
a. Write a brief report that explains the advantages and disadvantages of companies using legacy code. Be sure to cite your sources.
b. Cite an example, different from the examples provided in Topic 5, of a company that experienced problems with legacy code and state what they did to remedy those problems. (You must provide a working URL for your example.)
Question 4
Do the following to create a web page:
a. Open Notepad.
b. Use HTML tags to create a blank web page with the following title "[Your student name]'s Module 8 Question 6"
Save the file with the name [your initials in lower case]m8q6.htm.
c. Go to Select the Background Effects link.
d. Choose one of the free JavaScript background effects. Do not choose Title Bar Scroller.
e. Copy the sample code into the body of your HTML file. (Make sure you copy all of it or the JavaScript will not run.)
f. Save and close your file.
g. View the file in Internet Explorer to ensure that it works correctly. (Depending on your browser settings, you may have to allow the blocked content to run).
h. Change the JavaScript code so that your name appears on the webpage.
i. Save and close the file.
j. Again view the file in Internet Explorer to ensure that it works correctly.
k. Make any corrections as needed.
d. Submit the HTML file for marking as a separate file.
