Nitrogen is a gas that makes up approximately 79% of the atmosphere. It exists in the form of the diatomic molecule N2. In this form, the two nitrogen atoms are held together by a triple covalent bond. This bond is very strong. Consequently, nitrogen gas is fairly stable and relatively inert.
Nitrogen is important to living things. It is an essential constituent of proteins. It is also important in air. It dilutes the oxygen in air to prevent combustion and prevents respiration from taking place too rapidly.
Nitrogen is an important raw material in industry. It is used for the production of ammonia. Ammonia, NH3, is a key industrial chemical from which many other important chemicals are made.
