Q1:
Using DNA-DNA hybridization creates an imperfect match of two strands of DNA. The more stable the double strand, the closer species are related. This is a newer technique in determining phylogenetic relationships or phylogentic trees. Discuss whether you believe this process is a good method to determine how similar species are related opposed to some of the more recognized systems.
Q2
There are morphological, behavioral and now biochemical data that can be used for developing classification systems. Pick one of the Orders on page 12 of your book (do not use Passeriformes) and identify after doing some research what characteristics or methods you think was used to put those specie(s) in that Order. If you pick an Order with only one species, then you need to compare it to another Order with one species. If you pick Order with multiple species you can look at between-species characteristics within that Order.
Q3
Don't like either of these questions. Then based on the assigned reading for this LU, ask one of your own questions. Make sure that the question displays critical thinking and is a question that will generate discussion.
Discussion 1: Q1
The are many different forms of environmental ethics. How do these ethics influence they way we perceive environmental issues? Why should/ or should not environmental ethics be a part of environmental science?
Discussion 1: Q2
If you had to classify the main environmental approach (development, preservation, conservation) that you feel is most prevalent in today's society, which would you choose and why? How does this approach differ from region to region?
Discussion 1: Q3
Granting polluting industries or countries the right to buy and sell emissions permits is a controversial idea. Some argue that the market is the best way to limit pollution, while others argue that trade in permits allows polluting industries to continue polluting. What is your take on this? Should the sale of additional "environmental permits" be used to subsidize inadequately funded environmental programs?
