Q. What are the Properties of Nitrogen?
Ans.
Physical Properties of Nitrogen
Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. It is particularly unreactive at room temperature. It is slightly less dense than air, and slightly soluble in water. It liquefies to a colorless liquid and freezes at -210oC.
Chemical Properties of Nitrogen
Nitrogen does not change the color of litmus paper; therefore, it is neutral. It does not burn or support combustion.
The unreactivity of nitrogen can be explained by its high dissociation energy (945 kJ/mol) caused by the strong triple bond. A lot of energy is required to break the triple bond in molecular nitrogen.
