Q. Waste Water Treatment?
Typically, there are a number of waste water streams which need to be treated before disposal to land or water. Depending on the nature of contamination and the required discharge quality, significant treatment facilities may be required (including tanks, chemical dosing, skimmers, separators, cooling towers, aeration ponds, evaporation ponds, wetlands, etc.).
These are typically located away from, and downwind of, other plant facilities as there can be risk of odor and airborne bacteria (legionella). Surface water drains and sumps for collecting spillage are engineered by the civil design group. Agreement on the location of these drains with civil design department is required. Generally, surface water will run from the high point of paving, centre line of pipe racks, to collection grids, and into a collection pond.
Buried services are usually limited to firewater ring mains, cooling water and process drains to sumps. They need to be located early in the design, in co-ordination with the Civil Department. Local authorities may require buried process lines and sumps to secondary containment. Refer to applicable regulation. Waste treatment units are usually located in Offsite areas and should be designed to prevent contamination of local waterways, and located away from and downwind of any local communities. Sludge removal by road tanker may be required.
