Q. Reactions with metals?
Ans.
Halogens commonly undergo reactions with metals. Halogens react with the alkali metal family, Group IA in the periodic table. For example, chlorine reacts with potassium hydroxide to form potassium chloride and potassium hypochlorite.
Cl2 + 2KOH -> KCl + KOCl + H2O
Many metals burn in chlorine to form metal chlorides. When sodium burns with chlorine, a yellow flame and white smoke are observed:
2Na(s) + Cl2(g) -> 2NaCl(s)
