Q. Briefly explain about Diffusion of Gases?
Ans.
The following are some important points on the diffusion of gases:
- Gas molecules have an average kinetic energy (Ek) at a particular temperature as defined by this equation
Ek = 1/2 mv2
(m is the mass of the gas molecule, and v is the average speed.)
- Temperature is proportional to the kinetic energy. In fact temperature is actually a measure of kinetic energy.
- Comparing the above equation for two different gases at the same temperature shows that the following relationship between the masses and velocities of the molecules:
m2/m1 = v12/v22
- This relationship is important to chemists when they want to separate different isotopes of gases.
