Q. Application of electrometallurgy?
In theory, aluminium metal would be made the same way. But, aluminium trichloride is covalent and it does not conductor of electricity. As you will recall aluminium is obtained by electrolytic reduction of alumina in fused cryolite at 110-130 K using carbon anode and iron cathode. Electrolysis yields aluminium at cathode and 02 at anode which reacts with carbon to produce CO2. The reactions at electrodes are:
Anode: 2O2- --------------> O2 (g) + 4e
C(s) + O2 (g) ------------------> CO2 (g)
Cathode: Al3+ 3e------------> Al(s)
