Question: Published studies indicate that generalized brain dysfunction may predispose someone to violent behavior. Of interest is determining which brain areas might be dysfunctional in violent offenders. In a portion of such a study conducted by Raine, Buchsbaum, and LaCasse (1997), glucose metabolism rates of 41 murderers were compared to the rates for 41 control participants. Results for the left hemisphere, lateral prefrontal region of the brain yielded a sample mean of 1.12 for the controls and 1.09 for the murderers. The corresponding standard deviations were 0.05 and 0.06. Verify that when using Student's T, T = 2.45, and that you reject with α = 0.05.
