Public policy and advocacy intern in a non-profit agency

Assignment task:

Liz is a public policy and advocacy intern in a non-profit agency that holds annual fund drives to raise money for children's services in the region.  Her supervisor invited her to lunch and ordered more than a glass of wine to enjoy with her meal.  Another coworker joined them, and the conversation evolved-or devolved, depending on how you look at it, into a politically focused discussion about community funds being distributed to agencies that serve children, some of whose parents are gay.  Liz was overwhelmed by this turn in the conversation.

What would you do if you were Liz?  It never crossed Liz's mind that decisions about the distribution of funds could be affected by personal biases about the eventual recipient of the services.  After all, the site's mission statement is clear about its responsibilities.  Liz is feeling sick to her stomach as well.  She does not think that she can work with this supervisor or coworker.  Liz's parents are gay, and this issue is striking too close to home.

What are Liz's next steps?  Before answering this question, think about Liz's situation in terms of the four guiding questions:  What? So What? Now What? Then What?
