Final Project -Understand public policies on regional economic development
1. Grouping
• You can choose to work individually
• IF you choose to work as group,
1) One group cannot go beyond 3 people;
2) Each of you will provide a statement of contribution. Individual participation score will be impacted if he or she did not fully participate in the project.
2. Topics to discuss
Based on your reading and learning from this quarter, think about these general questions: why do businesses choose to locate at certain places? How do local (or regional) public policies contribute to regional economic development? In particular, many local and regional governments compete for investment through different incentives or public spending policies. In this final project, choose one from the following topics to write a report.
(1) Entrepreneurial ecosystem
• What does "entrepreneurial ecosystem" mean?
• How to promote entrepreneurship? What are the factors for entrepreneurship and regional development?
• What are the particularly challenges in disadvantaged or underserved communities in promote entrepreneurship?
(2) Role of government incentives on economic growth
• What are the general incentives or policies for local government in promoting economic growth (particularly measured by the growth of business)?
• In what ways do these policies impact economic growth?
• Some policies work and some not. Summarize your findings about the impacts of these policies.
(3) University's role in regional development
• What are the traditional roles of University? (their mission and goals)
• Why are universities involved in regional development?
• In what ways do universities contribute to regional development?
• What are the necessary conditions for university to contribute to regional development?

· Collect your readings from Google Scholar using key words.
· For anything you use in the writing, cite them properly. (Last Name, Year) in the text and provide the full citation at the end.
· Discuss with me as you read; feel free to consult me before you write
· Use these following journals to collect your own readings:
Journal of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice; Journal of Business Ventures
Economic Development Quarterly
Journal of Public Finance
Regional Science; Regional Studies
Requirements
· Focus on the journals that I give you, using key word search (e.g. art; revitalization; university; culture; social entrepreneurship)
· Expand the search if you need more references, through google scholar, just looking at who cited the best articles you like.
· Elaborate the key points with details and examples (Simply assume readers know nothing about the topic)
· Use sub-titles properly to lead your major points.
· Rephrase as necessary. Never copy and paste.
· Don't worry about format except for keeping it single-spaced.
· Put all the readings to the shared google drive with all your group members.
Final Product:
· An essay report developed by each person/group
· Maximum 10 pages, single-spaced, excluding charts, maps, graphs, and references
