Develop both a preparation outline and a presentation outline for the following speech: When my parents went to college, they felt removed from their friends who went to schools in other parts of the country. They took time away from their books and wrote long letters, and then waited for a reply. Distant as they were from friends in this country, they couldn’t imagine having strong friendships with people around the world. Like me, you may have had trouble explaining to your parents how you can keep up relationships with people abroad. But social networking has made it possible to build and maintain friendships around the globe. From our doom rooms in the Midwest, we can use Facebook to “poke” a friend living in the Middle East. Business majors can secure summer internships in India by tapping into their peers’ LinkedIn profiles. Aspiring musicians can promote their band’s new album to a fan club in Germany using Myspace. The world is now a smaller place. And we can take advantage of its diminishing size. Web 1.0 was about the globalization of information, but Web 2.0 is about the globalization of relationships. We should learn more about people from far-off places and the events and rituals that mark their lives.
