Procedure to ensure the stomach and esophagus are clear

Problem: The client should be instructed to fast for about 6-8 hours before the procedure to ensure the stomach and esophagus are clear for optimal imaging. The client may need to pause certain medications before the procedure. Give patient education explaining that the procedure involves swallowing a barium-containing liquid, which helps outline the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine on X-rays and that the barium mixture may taste chalky but is not harmful. For after care, advise the client that the barium may cause stools to appear white or lighter in color for a few days after the procedure. Encourage increased fluid intake post-procedure to help expel the barium from the gastrointestinal tract and prevent constipation. And inform the client about the possibility of constipation following the procedure and advise them on dietary adjustments or discuss the use of mild laxatives if necessary. Need Assignment Help?
