Problem related to selection and retention of new hires

Assignment task:

An experienced line manager in a medium size company is interviewing job candidates for a technical specialist position. The manager had problems with employees who had been interviewed and selected by him. These employees either left the job within one year after being hired or requested to be transferred to another position within the company. The manager uses an unstructured interview in the selection process.

(a) The Human Resource (HR) Manager is concerned that the line manager has not been effective in the selection and retention of new hires. In discussing the problem with the line manager, propose an appropriate selection method the HR Manager will suggest to the line manager. Explain three (3) reasons why this method will be suitable in the selection of technical specialists.

(b) The Human Resource Manager observed in previous interview sessions with the line manager that some of the following questions were asked during the interview:

  • How many children do you have?
  • How much longer do you plan to work before retiring?
  • Have you ever been arrested?

For each of these questions, appraise the importance of the question, the appropriateness of the question and, where needed, propose a different way to ask the question.
