As stated in an article published by the National Library of Medicine, left sided heart failure occurs when the left ventricle does not pump enough blood to the body, right sided is caused by the lungs not receiving enough blood from the right ventricle and biventicular heart failure is due to both sides of the heart not pumping enough blood (Informed Health 2018). According to the video, the different types of heart failure can be distinguished by a number of factors including: elevated LDL levels, myocardial ischemia (restriction of blood flow), and angina pectoris (chest pain).
Henry went into the ER with swollen ankles, trouble breathing, a family history of heart attack and stroke as well as a previous heart attack himself, and issues with high cholesterol and being overweight. The nurse also noted that the patient had a double coronary bypass 6 months after his previous heart attack. An important thing to note in Henry is the swollen ankles and feet, right sided heart failure can be differentiated by "buildup of fluid in the legs" (Informed Health 2018). This is a sign that he is experiencing right sided heart failure. Right sided heart failure also causes a shortness of breath since there is not enough blood flow going into the lungs. This is something that patient Henry said he was experiencing quite frequently, to the point where he can't even sleep unless propped up. As mentioned before, Henry had already had a heart attack as well as undergoing a double coronary bypass. This is a risk factor and could have possibly put more pressure on his heart. Since Henry was overweight and had high cholesterol, his heart was probably being over worked which lead to the right sided heart failure.
