To confirm that the mushroom yield is exclusively based on the changing concentrations of heavy metals and not on any other possible factors, stable values for the nitrate concentration and pH levels are maintained throughout the four levels of heavy metal concentration testing. It will be easier to reduce any potential inaccuracies that may be found throughout the experiment if all other factors that might affect the number of mushrooms are kept constant.
