Problem: Malik is a 52 y/o male who was referred to you by his therapist. Review the highlights of the visit and respond to the question: Taking hydrocodone since his primary care provider (PCP) prescribed it after a sports related knee injury 3 years ago. The injury resolved within 6 wks, but Malik says he continued to use hydrocodone because he felt it was helping his performance so he told his PCP that his knee was still hurting. Started taking it for other reasons like when he couldn't sleep, or when he was feeling anxious. He noticed that he needed to take it more often during the day due to wearing off too soon. He got concerned about how many pills he was taking because when he ran out before the next refill was due, he felt pretty awful. Sweaty, jittery, anxious, and achy. Now worrying a lot about what would happen if he couldn't get the medication or if it stopped working and he needed to take higher doses for it to work. He tried to tell his primary care provider that he still had knee pain and needed some extra pills to get him through his sports and work
