One of the most significant geological events in the state's history was the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. Around 300 to 250 million years ago, during the Alleghenian orogeny, tectonic forces caused the Earth's crust to buckle and fold, creating these majestic mountains that stretch across much of the eastern United States. The geology of West Virginia is characterized by a variety of rock formations. In the eastern part of the state, you'll find sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone, shale, and limestone, which were deposited in ancient seas and river systems. These sedimentary rocks are rich in fossils, giving us insights into the past environments of the region. In the western part of the state, you'll encounter a different type of rock called the Appalachian Plateau.
