Problem: My mom had a significant lumbar surgery on Monday. I have spent the past few days with her in a facility in which I do not work. I am disheartened by how much advocacy I have had to have for my mother because for the most part, the nurses on the floor have not been very attentive to her needs. I try to stay incognito so that people aren't trying to be on their best behavior because they know I'm a nurse. Yesterday, her nurse was very friendly but did not come into the room until nearly 9 am. No bedside shift report was done. The nurse never put a stethoscope to my mom. I'm sure that an assessment was charted, but that assessment never took place. After surgery we all know there are a lot of complications that can occur due to narcotics etc. She didn't check her bowel sounds and she wasn't on telemetry. My mom also has a hx of afib and had been off her amiodarone and xarelto for a few days. Tell us what you might do to advocate for your mom if you were in the same situation.
