Problem regarding participation in online discussion forums

Assignment task:

Provide a 150-word response to the peer discussions below. Please reference the response.

1st Posting: When I was completing my undergraduate degree in sports management online from Post University, the university assessed my learning through a variety of methods:

1. Online Quizzes and Exams: Regular assessments in the form of multiple-choice quizzes and exams that tested my understanding of the course material.

2. Discussion Boards: Participation in online discussion forums where we discussed weekly topics and interacted with peers and instructors, which helped assess our engagement and understanding.

3. Assignments and Projects: Submission of written assignments, case studies, and projects that required applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.

4. Presentations: Creating and submitting video presentations or PowerPoint slides on specific topics, demonstrating our ability to research and convey information effectively.

5. Peer Reviews: Engaging in peer review activities where we provided feedback on each other's work, fostering collaborative learning and critical thinking.

Areas for Improvement in Assessment Techniques:

1. More Interactive Assessments: Incorporating interactive simulations or virtual labs to better assess practical skills and decision-making in real-world scenarios. This could provide a more hands-on approach to learning, especially important in a field like sports management.

2. Formative Assessments: Increasing the use of formative assessments, such as frequent low-stakes quizzes or in-class activities that provide immediate feedback. This would help identify areas of misunderstanding early on and allow for timely intervention.

3. Diverse Assessment Methods: Utilizing a wider variety of assessment methods, such as role-playing exercises, real-time online debates, or collaborative group projects, to cater to different learning styles and provide a more comprehensive evaluation of student capabilities.

4. Feedback Quality and Timeliness: Ensuring that feedback on assignments and exams is detailed and provided promptly. Constructive feedback is crucial for learning and improvement, and delays can hinder student progress.

5. Peer and Self-Assessment: Incorporating more opportunities for peer and self-assessment to encourage reflection and self-regulated learning. This can help students develop critical thinking and self-evaluation skills.

6. Capstone Projects or Internships: Emphasizing experiential learning through capstone projects or internships that require students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. These experiences can be assessed through reflective journals, supervisor evaluations, and project reports.

2nd Posting: The corporatization of higher education, which involves adopting business-like practices and structures within universities and colleges, comes with both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, this approach can lead to increased efficiency, as streamlined administrative processes and better resource management can result in cost savings and improved operational effectiveness (Smith, 2019). Additionally, enhanced financial management can provide institutions with more stability and the ability to invest in new technologies, infrastructure, and academic programs (Johnson, 2020). This business-oriented mindset often fosters innovation and responsiveness to market demands, potentially leading to more relevant and up-to-date curricula that better prepare students for the workforce.

However, there are significant downsides to corporatization. The focus on profitability and marketability can sometimes overshadow the core educational mission of institutions, prioritizing revenue-generating programs over those that are academically valuable but less profitable (Doe, 2021). This can lead to the marginalization of humanities and social sciences in favor of more lucrative fields like business and technology. Furthermore, the emphasis on student enrollment numbers and retention rates can create pressure to lower academic standards, compromising the quality of education. The student experience may also suffer, as the push for efficiency can result in larger class sizes, reduced faculty-student interaction, and a diminished sense of community (Taylor, 2020).

In my opinion, while some business practices can undoubtedly benefit higher education institutions by making them more efficient and financially stable, it is crucial to strike a balance. Universities should remain committed to their educational missions and ensure that the pursuit of profit does not come at the expense of academic integrity and the holistic development of students. Maintaining this balance is essential to preserving the unique value and purpose of higher education (Adams, 2019).
