Assignment Task:
NARCOTICS Anonymous
My experience: I attended a Narcotics Anonymous meeting and had the opportunity to listen to several individuals share their stories-some who have made progress in overcoming their active addiction. Many spoke about leaving their families for drugs and combining drug use with alcohol. One individual shared how they had become dependent on the drug just to function. The experience was an eye-opener and reminded me of how resilient a person can be.
Objectives After your one-day clinical experience, you will be able to: 1. Identify and briefly describe purpose of the support group and/or services offered to the clients. 2. Identify types of clients, problems and issues discussed, education provided, and role of the group leader. 3. Describe the needs of the group. 4. Explain the effect of substance abuse on the client. 5. The recovery model is an important component of substance abuse treatment. Why is the model so challenging for the client(s)? 6. Describe your experience and/or concerns after having attended the group.

Purpose:
Attending and observing a support group, such as the twelve-step programs, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) that are available in the community for your clients and their families will serve to emphasize the value of including community resources in your plan of care. The purpose of attending such a support group is to gain a greater depth of understanding than is done in a regular clinical setting. Meetings generally are 1-2 hours in length.

- Some meetings are closed to outsiders. Attend only open meetings
- You must attend a group in person with members attending in person
- Attend a meeting at least one town away to avoid running into someone you may know and to maintain confidentiality
- No more than 2 students may attend a group together
- Before going to a meeting, check with the AA & NA online website to verify meeting time, location or any other requirements/specifics. Make sure it is not a phone or internet group
- Dress in a professional manner. Remember you are representing the nursing program while there, so be sure to maintain professional behavior that does not negatively affect the group dynamics (i.e., arriving late, talking, text messages etc.). Do not wear your clinical uniform.
- Plan to arrive at the program or group at least ½ hour before the program or group begins. Arrive early so that you can touch base with the contact person/group leader for any last minute suggestions. If you find that you are going to be late - Do not attend - Reschedule! Do Not Take Any Notes During The Meeting!
- Do not wear your student ID badge (keep your student ID badge in your pocket in case group leader requests you wear it)
