While on roving patrol during the evening shift, you come across a vehicle that had veered off the road and struck a parked vehicle. When you approach the vehicle, you immediately recognize that the driver is Captain Jones from your department who was driving his wife's vehicle.  Assume that Captain Jones' behavior and actions clearly suggest that he is intoxicated.

Should you arrest Captain Jones, assuming that he subsequently failed the field sobriety test, or should you call his wife to pick him up?  Explain how you would proceed and why. (Be sure to showcase your critical thinking skills when explaining "why.")

Question 4: This week's reading provides overview of the research on biological and psychological perspectives, as well as discusses strain and culture deviance theories. Discuss/debate with your classmates your position pertaining to biological and psychological perspectives of explaining crime. Also, examine at least one theory from the assigned reading that explain crime and articulate why you either strongly agree or disagree with it.

2. Discuss the history of the U.S. federal correction system and your home state department of corrections history. What are the different departments with the correctional systems?

This week's lesson focuses on two concepts, the dual court system and corrections.  The dual court system is the separation of the state and federal courts.  You will find that on the state level, no two states have the exact same court structure as states are independent of each other and control their structure, tiers, and jurisdictions.  The federal court system is consistent throughout the United States.  The three-tiered federal system comprises the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, and U.S. District Courts.  You will read more specifics on each court in the lesson and readings.  The correctional system can vary from state to state.  The Federal Prison System is consistent across the country.  You can search your own state's corrections history.  Be sure to examine what types of inmates they house, disciplinary actions they can take, number of inmates, and changes or innovations your state has taken to deal with the prison population.
