Problem: As nurses, it is paramount to demonstrate tangible actions that show our commitment to patient-centered care. While it can be easy to become overly focused on objective tasks, dedicating time to active listening ensures that the patients feel heard. The information gathered through active listening is crucial for developing a concrete plan custom to their needs and preferences. Maintaining constant communication with patients and their family members during hospital stay keeps them well informed and allows them to participate in decision-making. Empathy is a universal language that allows nurses to recognize and understand the patients feelings. According to Dr. James, "Studies demonstrate how empathy improves patient satisfaction, treatment compliance, and clinical outcomes" (2023). Practicing with empathy such as being present, light touch, allowing the expression of negactive feeling demonstrates true empathy reinforcing a meaningful interaction.
