Assignment Task: A 28-year-old male entered an urgent care with complaints of urethral discharge. Physical examination also revealed rashes on his feet and forearms. He informed the physician of an unprotected sex he had two weeks earlier with an acquaintance at a social gathering. A multiplex PCR was ordered for Chlamydia and gonorrhea and the patient was also treated empirically for both as well as for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Serological test for syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV were also performed. Multiplex PCR yielded positive results for Chlamydia. The serology tests came up negative for all the above tested. The patient reentered the urgent care seeking treatment for ulcers in mouth, fever, and fatigue and weight loss. Lab tests suggested that the patient is lymphocytopenic and his liver enzymes are elevated. Which molecular test should have been ordered during his first visit that would have provided an accurate diagnosis? Explain.
