The nursing specialty I chose within this program is Trauma. Trauma Nurse Practitioners care for patients with critical or life-threatening injuries (Gaines, 2023). More often than not, they are the first to respond in emergency situations that involve self-inflicted injuries or victims of violent crimes. They are a part of a team that works with the emergency department staff to stabilize patients and give them the best possible outcome during their hospitalization. In order to work in trauma, a person must be able to do well under pressure, prioritize and multitask, and follow instructions in crazy situations. Trauma nurses also have a duty to provide education programs to the public that can help prevent injuries. An example of this would be wearing the appropriate protection when riding a motorcycle. They also reach out to groups that are most likely to suffer from traumatic injuries. These groups include children, the elderly, teen drivers, and people employed in dangerous occupations (Gaines, 2023).
I had no trouble choosing this speciality. For most of my nursing career I worked on a step-down trauma unit. At this point I had already experienced every specialty working as float pool staff. I felt most comfortable and most interested in trauma patients. As odd as it may sound, I felt like working on a trauma unit felt like home. Nursing can be a very demanding field and it is very easy to get burnt out, but I never felt that way working on this unit. A unit that I plan on gaining membership in with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). This association is for any nurse practitioner no matter the specialty (AANP, 2023). It provides nurse practitioners with access to clinical resources, opportunities for professional recognition, practice related research, therapeutic practice, and professional development. In order to become a member, all you have to do is go to their website and apply for membership. They even have a survey that determines which is the best type of membership for you (AANP, 2023).
