Assignment Task 1:

You are an expert in Language Learning. You have been asked by the Director of the English Language Centre (ELC) in the University of Liverpool (UoL) to make recommendations on how a Korean student called Hae OkPark should be taught.

Write a report to the Director of Studies in ELC, containing:

a) An analysis of Hae Ok's performance, highlighting positive and negative factors affecting her second language acquisition. (See 'Hae Ok's Performance Data' box below)

b) Specific recommendations on what the ELC could do to help Hae Ok.

For both a) and b) above, support your main points with quotes and references from the relevant literature in a way useful to the DoS and the ELC teachers. Add a list of references at the end in APA style.

There is no need for an introduction, or the sort of literature review you see in academic papers or an ending with a signature, etc.

The DoS is busy and will appreciate a report which is concise, relevant, easy to understand but theoretically up-to-date and valid. After reading your report, the DoS and ELC teachers should be made aware about what went right and what went wrong with Hae Ok's previous learning experience in the light of Second Language Acquisition theories. Even more importantly, the DoS and ELC teachers should be clear about the principled teaching procedures and the environment that could facilitate Hae Ok's second language acquisition and development.

Assignment Task 2:

You are a team leader of English teachers in a Lebanese primary school (EFL). One of your roles as Leader is to conduct teacher development for your colleagues through classroom observation and feedback.

You have observed Teacher A and Teacher B and you need to give advice to those teachers.

Write feedback for each teacher to supplement the advice you will give them orally:

a) Describe what the teacher did that may facilitate second language acquisition and what may not facilitate language acquisition.

b) Give praise and encouragement if their actions are likely to enhance acquisition by referring to relevant theories in SLA in a very simple manner for each point in a) above.

c) Suggest changes for each point in a) above so that they can improve their teaching practices in relation to SLA principles

Your written feedback needs to be theoretically sound but it also needs to be accessible to a teacher who has not studied applied linguistics or TESOL and, also, to be of practical use. The teachers are not likely to be able to look up references.

Task 2.1 Your Feedback on Teacher A's performance (Use the transcript of Teacher A's classroom interactions in Appendix 1)(Approximately 500 words)

Task 2.2 Your Feedback on Teacher B's performance (Use the transcript of Teacher B's classroom interactions in Appendix 2) (Approximately 500 words)

Assignment Task 3:

Tomlinson (2013)* summarized SLA principles that seem to attract agreement among researchers. Seven principles have been extracted in the Table below entitled 'Match between SLA theory and ELT Materials'.

Experience the course book Extract in Appendix 3 as a learner. Reflect upon your experience in terms of the criteria in the TABLE below.

Evaluate the course book extract in Appendix 3. Make sure:

a) You give a numerical score in the column named 'Level of match':

1 very low match; 2 low match; 3 high match; 4 very high match.

b) Explain why you gave the score in the Rationale column. Give one or two examples from the course book extract to support your evaluation.
