Assignment Specifications
Purpose:
This assignment aims at providing students with an opportunity to reflect on organizational problems and challenges and apply concepts and frameworks covered within the subject to solving such problems.
In groups of 3-5, students must:
Step 1: Identify an appropriate organisation for your analysis. This could be the organisation you are currently work in or have worked in previously, or an organisation you are otherwise familiar with, either through personal experience, popular press opinion or through literature search.
Step 2: The chosen company and group membership list must be approved by your lecturer latest in week 6. Each group must select different company which will be approved on a 'first-come first-serve' basis.
Step 3: Your task then is to identify and briefly describe a current organizational problem or challenge faced by your chosen organisation. Relevant problems or challenges may include (but not limited to) high turnover rate, low performance among workers, the need to implement a change within the organisation, poor communication between managers and employees, etc. Note that these are only examples and you are free to focus on other problems that have practical relevance to the specific organisation you have chosen.
Step 4: Critically analyze the problem or challenge you have identified in step 3; drawing on relevant concepts and theories taught in this unit.
Step 5 Based on your analysis; make specific recommendations on how to resolve the problem or challenge and how to improve the organization's effectiveness in dealing with the issues.
Step 6 Based on your report, prepare PowerPoint slides of key findings and make a presentation in class beginning from study week 9.
Assignment report structure should be as the following:
As a minimum, the report should contain the following:
1) Executive Summary
2) Brief Introduction and background information of the selected organisation
3) Overview of the current organizational problem or challenge
4) Detailed analysis of the current organizational problem supported with relevant concepts and theories thought in class
5) Conclusion and Recommendations
6) Reference list (a minimum of 8 academic references with links back to in-text citations).
Recommended Power Point Presentation Guidelines: Students use this as recommendation only.
Presentation would be held in week 9, 10 and 11 at your lecturer's discretion.
Power point slides must be submitted through blackboard before the start of presentation schedule.
1. Maximum of 10 slides
2. Slide number 1 should contain Topic, Names and SID's of all group members
3. Individual slides must be numbered,
4. Avoid too much text, use relevant pictures, illustrations, diagrams or graphics.
5. Use a maximum of six (6) text lines per slide and a minimum of 24 pt font size.
6. Prepare palm size cue cards to write important points to refer during presentation
7. Strictly no reading from the slides or notes bigger than the cue cards
8. Each team member must participate and be physically present for power point presentation.
