The major ideas of Confucius put a high value on character and conduct. He believed that the world could be affected by people who have strong ethical values. For example, nobility is an important value because a noble person will put what is right before personal gain and desires. Confucius taught young people to always be respectful to their parents and elders because the practice of morality is the root of the family. Being respectful creates a more humane person who will contribute to society in a positive way. His highest virtue was humanity. Humanity is when a person extends unconditional love, by helping those who need it, despite their personal wants. Without humanity, a society cannot function if people are not willing to consider other's perspectives and do their best for them. Examples of positively helping people today could be holding the door for someone, letting a car go in front of you in traffic, volunteering to help a neighbor with yard work, cooking a meal for someone, etc. The possibilities are endless!
