Problem based on delusions and agitation


Problem:

A 47 year old women who is a teacher went on a tour to another city with a group of fellow-teachers. To save money, they shared hotel rooms. Two or three days after the trip began, her friends began to notice a change in the patient. She became increasingly anxious and began to talk about people watching her. On the third night she became more delusional, refused to get ready for bed, and began pacing the hotel room looking in the closet and under the bed for people hiding there to watch her. Her friends became increasingly alarmed, and took her to a nearby hospital where she was examined, given some medication to calm her nerves, and sent back to the hotel with her friends. The patient continued to be agitated. The next day, her husband arrived to take her home and had her admitted to a local psychiatric hospital near her home. Within 2 days of her admission her delusions and agitation disappeared without medication. The patient was discharged in 5 days with no evidence of psychiatric symptoms.
