Assignment task: Data for benchmarking:
You are working in an HIM department; the department director asks if you can find data to use for benchmarking payment for heart failure, knee replacements, and pneumonia. Upper-level management has asked her to determine how your facility compares to the national average and other facilities in your area on a cost basis. You select the Hospital Compare database as the source of data. In this case, the benchmarking stakeholders are the payer (CMS), your organization, and the patients you serve, so all stakeholders must be considered in your selection.
Go to the CMS website hospital compare
1. Search for a facility and select it from the list returned. This first selection will represent "your organization." Click quality from the tab and scroll down to "payment and value of care." Expand this section to find the data. To present the data, create a table and record the three data amounts for heart failure, knee replacements, and pneumonia.
2. Repeat with three more facilities and include the national average for comparison to use as benchmark comparisons.
3 Essay: Explain which of the three hospitals you would recommend as the best data source for benchmarking these payment parameters. Justify your decision. Keep in mind that there are other factors and stakeholders in the process, so cheaper is not always the best parameter for your decision. Include additional quality factors such as patient satisfaction, complications, and death in your final assessment. (150 words or more)
