Assignment Task:
The school nurse is caring for a 15-year-old student with diabetes. The student uses an insulin pump and is to check in with the nurse each day at lunchtime to review the day's blood sugar readings, food diary, and then adjust the pump as needed ahead of lunch. The insulin pump is new to the student, and it is used along with a continuous glucose monitoring system. The student is overweight and not involved in physical activity other than physical education class. The student is not fully comfortable with the pump due to being concerned that other students will see it and feeling different than their peers. The student has been working to be compliant with the insulin pump and glucometer monitoring but demonstrates a lack of confidence with the new process. The nurse reviews the student's food intake diary and notes many fast foods and high calorie options, especially from the convenience store near the school. The student states their parents are often not home to cook meals until late in the evening; therefore, they are choosing food from the convenience store before and after school.
